Fire Exit Signs

If there is just one sign any premises cannot have too many of, it's the familiar green 'fire exit' sign. The fire exit image of a person running and an open doorway is used throughout the world.

Two types of green exit sign are permitted in the UK. The British standard shows a person moving through the doorway, whilst the European standard shows the person separate from the doorway. UK Fire Regulations allow either design, and we sell the more popular British version.

Interestingly, you do not have to have any actual words on an exit sign, it's the pictogram that counts. However, word-only fire exit signs are now illegal, and should be replaced immediately.

Your business risk assessment should indicate exactly where you should place fire exit signs, so they are clearly visible at all times. This will include placing one over each fire exit door, but may also include hanging them from ceilings as well.

Lighting Your Fire Exit Signs

Fire exit signs above doors should ideally be illuminated either by back or front lighting, on a fail-safe circuit. However, this is is not always possible, so instead, use a good quality photoluminescent sign that will glow in the dark if the lights go out. Rigid plastic photoluminescent fire exit signs are designed to last for years, when cheaper sticky label versions have long since peeled and perished.
