The FX Fire 0.6kg car fire extinguisher is one of the most popular extinguishers sold in the UK. Containing BC powder, it is designed specifically for vehicles in a lightweight aluminium cylinder with a compact plastic headcap to enable it to fit into a convenient position in your car or even on a motorbike.

BC powder extinguishers are suitable for fighting Class B fire (flammable liquids, petrol. Diesel, oil, grease), Class C (flammable gases), and fires involving live electrical equipment. FX Fire car extinguishers are designed to be maintenance free and are disposable after 5 years. They are not refillable but a refill would cost more than the price of a new one anyway.

The updated British Standard 5306-8:2012 Selection and positioning of portable fire extinguishers – Code of Practice states as follows.

"5.4.3 Use of powder extinguishers The discharge of a powder extinguisher within buildings can cause a sudden reduction of visibility and can also impair breathing, which could temporarily jeopardize escape, rescue or other emergency action. For this reason, powder extinguishers should generally not be specified for use indoors, unless mitigated by a health and safety risk assessment."

If you are not sure what this means, please contact us any time or see our Fire Safety Survey service. Responsible extinguisher service technicians (including ours) may refuse to certify a powder extinguisher that is not suitable for the location.
